This booklet is a examine of the thematic, narrative, and musical constitution of Yuanqu xuan [A collection of Yuan performs] version of the Yuan zaju (variety play) Dou E yuan [Injustice to Dou E] initially composed through the very hot playwright Guan Hanqing (fl. 1260). even though different authors have studied those 3 points of Dou E yuan individually, this is often the 1st entire therapy of the subject as a scholarly monograph in English. Yumin Ao’s research is predicated at the variation of the play within the Yuanqu xuan [A number of Yuan performs] compiled through the Ming writer Zang Maoxun (ca. 1550-1620). In the next section, I justify my choice of Zang Maoxun’s YXQ edition of Dou E yuan and examine the details of Zang Maoxun’s life and his literati edition of the play. Zang Maoxun’s Yuanqu xuan Edition Zang Maoxun was a Ming editor and publisher who lived from 1550 to 1620. He came from Changxing 長興, a county on the south-western shore of the Lake Taihu 太湖, and he returned to this city in 1585 and spent most of his remaining years there, after being removed from his last official position. In 1580 soon after passing the advanced scholar examination, Zang Maoxun was appointed as the local government school instructor at Jingzhou 荊州 Prefecture.
Although he himself did not compose dramas, his ideas on theatrical studies can be found in his prefaces to and commentaries on the works of his dramatist friends. Zang was involved in the publishing business in his later years, and set up his own printing workshop to publish books, mainly play scripts, including his private collections and copies borrowed from other book collectors. The YQX, which has been the most influential anthology of Yuan zaju for some four centuries, was an important collection produced by Zang Maoxun.
This is the obvious reason why Yuan zaju has the evident quality of northern music and represents a more raucous and unconstrained art. And, as far as zaju performances in Yuan times are concerned, in most cases, there was a single protagonist who was rendered by the male or female lead, and who sang all the lyrics of the four song sets exclusively, each composing an act of a play. In addition, if we only discuss the role of texts of Yuan zaju, then the prosodic, rhymed and metric arias of each set of the songs were definitely of first importance in the texts of the plays.
