The two had started their movie careers together twenty years earlier with three small independent films, Greetings (1968), The Wedding Party (1969), and Hi, Mom! (1970). Thus when producer Art Linson expressed doubt about how the laconic, now-svelte De Niro would realistically portray the portly, verbose Capone, De Palma could reassure him about the actor’s dedication to preparation and his acting skills (Kroll, “Magnificent Obsessive,” Newsweek, 22 July 1987, 64).
