1 3 A concentration of aromatic carbon in the coarse clay and silt fractions was observed for both soils. Although the increase in aromatic carbon content was not large it is important since a large proportion of the total soil organic carbon in both soils was contained in these fractions. It should be pointed out that the portion of the total organic carbon analysed by solid-state C NMR using this technique was 74% and 77% for the Millicent and Urrbrae soils respectively. These values are substantially higher than that which would have been obtained if only the carbon extracted by the classical method was analysed.
