It is a means by which to discover sociologically significant things about people and their social relations. Ethnographic observation, then, is a method of discovery, by which the researcher builds sociological knowledge of the persons or groups under study. In this sense the ethnographic tradition is based upon a distinction between observer and observed. Even though the ethnographer may be a participant in the setting or activity under study, he or she is always an outsider in the sense that whatever he or she is doing as a participant is as a means to something else.
